SELF DRIVE SAFARIS
African self-drive safari might be right up your sleeve if you're a bit of an adventurer. There’s nothing quite like exploring Africa at your own pace and in your own time.
While most safari packages adhere to a pre-determined itinerary, a self-drive safari is where you get to take control. Yes, you’ll need to have your rest camps, campsites and other accommodation booked well in advance. But it will be up to you which route you take, how long you stay to watch those lions on a kill, or whether to park up near a waterhole and watch the wild unfold in front of your eyes, it is all in your hands!
Benefits
Flexibility and Control: the freedom to explore at your own pace and make your own decisions.
Cost-Effective: can be more cost-effective than a guided safari as you do not have to incur the costs associated with a guide or driver or restricted to expensive accommodation.
Personalised and Private Experience: tailor your trip to your own interests and preferences. Your trip without the presence of other tourists or guides offers you a more intimate and private experience.
Adventure: whether it is just youself or the whole family, it is sure to be filled with excitement and adrenaline, as you never know what you might encounter around the next bend.
Tips for wildlife spotting
Slow down take your time - slow speeds when driving around means more sightings and pulling up at a watering hole and waiting for a half-hour will surprise you.
Spotting Wildlife - The best times to spot wildlife is generally early morning and early evening, when they are at their most active.
Never exit your vehicle - Never get out of your vehicle, even if the animals appear docile or friendly. Big cats and other predators don’t associate vehicles as a food source or a threat, but once out of the vehicle, you are considered prey.
Guided Safaris - Why not include a guided safari to mix it up a bit, maybe a night drive from one of the rest camps
